Grandparents Now Able To Protect Grandchildren’s Health

(PRWEB) August 03, 2011

Grandparents can now help protect the health of their grandchildren by purchasing insurance specially designed and tailored to children and their more common ailments. The move by Aviva to allow grandparents to take out specialist health insurance for their grandchildren comes following evidence of the increased role they are taking in the lives and care of their children’s children.

Recent research from Aviva has shown that over half of grandparents (51%) now look after their grandchildren with the vast majority (88%) saying this extra time has brought them closer together1. The majority of grandparents have a genuine stake in the wellbeing of their grandchildren; over a third (34%) say they help teach them hobbies and life skills and almost a quarter help with homework (23%).

Aviva is now offering grandparents the ability to purchase Child Health Solutions, giving their grandchildren access to diagnosis and cover for treatment at private facilities for an affordable, fixed premium. The scheme also includes benefits such as dentistry, physiotherapy and speech therapy that have been specially chosen to complement the paediatric services available on the NHS. Assistance to help parents finance sundries such as travel expenses and parking costs if their child has to stay in hospital is also available.

Available via a simple quote and apply facility through specialist insurance broker Sure Insurance Services’ Childsure division (http://www.childsure.co.uk/) Child Health Solutions also has an information portal giving access to invaluable information on children’s health and developmental needs, parenting and education. The portal details the hospitals available and provides useful information designed to help customers make the most of their policy.

Rebecca Paterson, head of marketing at Aviva, said: “Whilst the NHS is particularly good at providing paediatric care, especially for the very young, we recognise that there are some services which can be complemented by the private sector. A growing number of grandparents are playing a more active role in their grandchildren’s lives and helping to protect their health is another way they can provide support and peace of mind for their own children.”

Alison Thornberry, Managing Director of Sure Insurance Services, welcomed this further increase in the availability of the Child Health Solutions product; “Child Health Solutions is a fantastic product, offering excellent benefits and affordability. Parents or grandparents can now insure children; I believe the peace of mind and high quality cover that Child Health Solutions provides is a welcome contribution to family life.”

1. Aviva commissioned extensive research among a panel of 208 GPs across the UK. The sample is broadly representative of the UK across age, gender, region, practice size (by patient numbers and number of GP’s working in practice) and how long the GP has been practicing. GPs were interviewed between May 9th and 11th 2011. The research was conducted online on behalf of Aviva by independent research company Pollab.

2. GPs taking part in the research worked on average 36 hours 7 minutes a week. The average amount of time spent with patients is 26 hours 34 minutes a week.
